AI Pisses Me Off

damn this is dense. articles a big work in progress. maybe someday it'll make sense

The Good

Sometimes I do use it for help when coding. It's often quicker at giving me a solution than scrolling through stack overflow. However, only for simple problems. When the problems get more complex, I find it struggles and I have to learn how to solve it from blogs or videos or whatnot. I was talking to some people I know who work at companies like meta and they were saying they themselves like AI and use it often. It helped speed up their work and they found it useful when programming. They also said that they were expected to do more now that they had ai at their disposal. brainstorming that helicopter yap. I once used it to generate an image of a helicopter as inspiration for a 3D modeling project. With that project, I was trying to emulate and condense a bunch of different helicopters into one new design that, although resembling real ones in certain ways, wasn't a copy. And in a way, AI worked great for that. It copied designs and melded them all into one that was recognizable as a helicopter and maybe as a certain model if you look at it some way, but was also something "new". And yet, looking back on it, it wasn't imaginative at all. That wasn't the goal, but maybe it should've been. The helicopter I ended up modeling was boring as hell and if I ever return to that project (doubtful) I'll want to spice it up.

The Bad

A lot of the times when searching for things I find articles written by AI which are wordy, vague, or just plain wrong. If I wanted an AI article I would've just asked chatgpt. When writing it can be useful to bounce ideas off of or to suggest synonyms and rephrasing. I rarely copy things word for word though because AI has this stuck up way of speaking that just pisses me off. It's like if Lorimer was injected into my pc. People pick things up subtly just by being exposed to it. And this may seem paranoid or whatnot, but I don't want to talk like gpt, so I try and limit my exposure. I wish companies wouldn't put AI in everything. I don't want more bloat in my OS. I don't want AI to search my pc, edit my pictures, or write my emails. I can do it myself. I think the biggest problem with artificial intelligence is that it's just not necessary. It just creates more mess and more junk, more slop, and less substance. Ai photos are getting scarily good. I've been fooled a few times and its always spooky. I can't think of a good use for AI image and video creation. Only thing I can see it being used for is to con and scam people or to replace workers. I suppose that last one from a certain point of view may be a benefit for cutting costs, but AI images aren't good or creative and just aren't as good as human.

Thoughts I don't know about

I enjoy the creation process that ai tries to replace. Theres something about a human made thing with its human imperfections that I like. AI inbreeding is a real concern. If it learns from stuff already generated by AI, it won't get any better. I don't mind that fact, but it's definitely out there. I think the bigger concern is humans learning from AI. I worry it'll make everyone talk the same, know the same things, and fall for the same fallacies. I don't want everyone sounding like GPT. And biases present in the model can be learned by humans. Kids are probably the most influencable by AI. And that's bad. School ai yap gonna go here later I saw someone use AI to blend between different camera angles to make it look like a single take. It was actually hella cool, but I didn't like it at first. But it's not actually that different from CGI right? It's using a computer to create something that couldn't have been done in person. And I like CGI, its fun to make. So why was I mad? I think it was just a predisposition to not like something that was made with AI. That sort of shot would have been extremely difficult and time consuming for someone to do with CGI, and AI made it possible and really really cool. If AI had come into fruition as nothing but a tool, would I have had a different opinion on it? Like, if I came into this as someone who hadnt had to deal with the bloat and the slop, what would I think? Would I regard this as a fad or a genuinely useful invention? I've kind of taken the stance that even if AI is out there, I don't want to use it. When I'm making stuff, I'm mostly making it for myself, and artificial intelligence would take the fun out of that. But if I was working on commercial projects, or trying to gain followers, or to insert myself into any of the competitive landscapes out there, maybe it would be beneficial. I also think that most people dislike artificial intelligence. We don't need it integrated into everything, people don't want to be replaced, and it's not imaginative.
